You could also use the support facilities of the program you are trying to install. Check to see if they have a mailing list or support forums for instance.

Known Issues

Packages opens in a text editor

Sometimes, the file manager can decide to open downloaded .package files in a plain text editor instead of installing them. There is a simple solution to this. Just follow these instructions.
